Defending champion Boris Becker has confirmed he will play in next month’s Australian Open tennis championships, according to tournament director Paul McNamee.

Becker has recovered from an ankle injury that forced him to withdraw from a tournament in Doha, Qatar, next week.

The first-round matches in the $107,500 New Zealand Classic tennis tournament in Auckland were postponed because of heavy rain associated with a passing cyclone.
