Stanford Beats Neighboring Pal Cal
Pac-10
Brevin Knight had 29 points and Dion Cross added 25 as Stanford extended its home winning streak to 12 games with a 93-79 win Wednesday night against neighbor California.
Stanford (12-5 overall, 6-3 Pac-10) opened the second half with a 14-2 run and built its lead to 16 points as Knight scored 18 of his points after halftime. The Cardinal held Cal without a basket for the opening 5:10 of the second half.
Ed Gray scored 22 points for Cal (11-6, 6-3), but Shareef Abdur-Rahim was held to 13 - tying the second-lowest output of the season for the freshman, who leads the Pac-10 in scoring with 24 points per game.
The Bears tied a season high by making 11 shots from 3-point range, but hit just two after halftime.
It was the first time Cal has lost when Gray scored 19 or more points. The Bears had won all 10 of their previous games in which Gray, a transfer in his first season at California, had reached that level.
Knight had 13 assists and Andy Poppink added 18 points and nine rebounds for Stanford. Jelani Gardner had 17 points for Cal.
With his 13 points, Abdur-Rahim moved into second place on Cal’s freshman scoring list with 395 points. He passed Lamond Murray, who had 387 points in 1992, and trails only Brian Hendrick’s 478 points in 1990.
The Bears were 9 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half, with Gardner hitting all three of his shots and Gray connecting on three of his four attempts. Overall, California shot 68 percent in the first half.
With the score tied 29-29, Cal went on an eight-point run, but Stanford responded with a 10-2 burst to tie the game against at 39-39. But the Bears finished with a 9-4 spurt to take a 48-43 halftime lead.
The Cardinal held Cal to just two free throws in the opening 5:10 of the second half to take a seven-point lead. The Bears pulled within 59-56 before Stanford pulled away.
