Lydia Sheffels Spokane

Visitation for Lydia E. Sheffels, 87, is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur, Wash. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilbur Lutheran Church. Graveside service will follow at Wilbur (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mrs. Sheffels, who died Tuesday, was born in Govan, Wash.

She graduated from Wilbur High School and married Louis Sheffels in 1928 in Wilbur. They lived on the Sheffels Centennial Farm until 1959, when they built a home and moved into Wilbur.

She and her husband participated in 4-H and Rainbow Girls.

Her husband died in 1985, and Mrs. Sheffels moved to Spokane in 1993.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church; Order of the Eastern Star; Lincoln County Nile Club No. 11, El Karnak Temple No. 6, Daughters of the Nile; Wilbur Grange; Washington Association of Wheat Growers; and the PLU Q Club and was a Washington State University Foundation silver associate.

Survivors include by one son, Jerald Sheffels of Wilbur; one daughter, Carol Ann Quigg of Spokane; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made the Wilbur Cemetery Foundation, Wilbur Community Center, Big Bend Historical Society or the Washington Wheat Foundation.

Weir ‘Bud’ Bell Spokane

Memorial service for Weir H. “Bud” Bell, 73, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mr. Bell, who died Saturday, was born near Roberts, Idaho. He graduated from Wenatchee High School and served in the Marines during World War II. He received the Purple Heart during the Battle of Okinawa.

He graduated from Washington State University with a teaching degree, and received a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University.

He taught high school in Alaska for 25 years. In 1974 he retired and moved to Colville, where he farmed and raised horses.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Ethel Bell; two daughters, Cynthia Bell of Webster, N.Y., Renee Bell of Puyallup, Wash.; three sons, Daniel Bell of Chelan, Wash., John Bell of Federal Way, Wash., and David Bell of Tempe, Ariz.; one sister, Rachel Richards of Tacoma; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Foundation, Intensive Care Unit.

Emily Adamson Spokane

Service for Emily Marion Adamson, 78, is planned for 11 a.m. today at the 6th Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will be Monday at Park City (Utah) Municipal Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adamson, who died Monday, was born in Mammoth, Utah.

She had worked for telephone companies in Utah and California, before moving to Spokane in 1975.

She served in children and youth ministries and women’s organizations in the church.

She is survived by her husband, Jean Adamson; one daughter, Patti Hatton of Canyon Country, Calif.; one son, Mike Adamson of Salt Lake City; four sisters, Marge Olsen of Brigham City, Utah, Dorothy Burke of Sun City West, Ariz., Lorna Esklund of Scipio, Utah, and Cecil Krueger of Hayward, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Isla Beard Pullman

Graveside service for Isla B. Beard, 102, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beard died Monday at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, Idaho. She was born in Fosston, Minn.

She married Clarence Beard in 1914 in Bemidji, Minn., and they lived in North Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota before they settled in Pullman in 1929.

She had worked at the Washington Hotel as housekeeping manager and was also a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1977.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Boyd and Mary Stephens, both of Pullman; seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Village Physical Therapy Department.

Sally Degenstein Spokane

Rosary for Sally Degenstein, 71, is planned for 6 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with burial to follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Degenstein, who died Monday, was born in Strasburg, N.D.

She moved to Spokane, with her husband, Walter Degenstein, in 1954.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years; three sons, Eugene Degenstein of Newman Lake, and Alvin and Edwin Degenstein, both of Spokane; eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Earl Hoover Spokane

Visitation for H. Earl Hoover, 89, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Hoover, who died Tuesday, was born Marlin, Wash.

A 52-year Spokane-area resident, he had worked for a railroad and for the Marlin School District. He also worked at the Goodyear recap plant in Spokane for 19 years and retired in 1968.

His wife, Viola, died in 1979.

Mr. Hoover is survived by three sons, Donald Hoover of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Merlyn and Ralph Hoover, both of Spokane; two daughters, Dolores Retter and Dixie Vokacek, both of Spokane; one sister, Ruby Totesek of Marlin; 18 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren.

Tom Kombol Spokane

Service for Tom Michael Kombol, 49, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Kombol, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Monday.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 1964 and was a long-haul truck driver.

He is survived by one brother, Peter Kombol of Lake Oswego, Ore., and one sister, Claudia Kirkes of Phoenix, Ariz.

Wendell Nilsson Spokane

Service for Wendell L. Nilsson, 87, is set for 2:30 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Nilsson, who died Sunday, was born in Marion, Neb.

He moved to Tekoa, Wash., with his family in 1915.

He served in World War II and following the war worked as a brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad before retiring in 1973.

He had lived in Spokane for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Nilsson; and one sister, Helena Finch of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Jared Boles Spokane

Funeral Mass for Jared A. (Hurd) Boles, is set for 6 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. A reception will follow at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.

Jared, 16, died Tuesday from complications due to Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy.

He was born in Spokane and was a lifetime Spokane resident. He was a student at Shadle Park High School.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts, Tessera Program, the Rotary Club Leadership Project and St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.

He is survived by his mother, Roberta Hurd Boles of Spokane; his father, Kevin Boles of Spokane; one sister, Sara Boles, at home; and his grandparents, Robert and Virginia Hurd, and Margaret Boles.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wishing Star Foundation or St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.

Ielane Fullmer Spokane

Visitation for Ielane Fullmer, 87, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Fullmer, a 66-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday at home. She was born in Enaville, Idaho.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Order of Amaranth, Order of White Shrine, Daughters of the Nile and El Karnak Temple.

Her husband, Lynn Fullmer, died in 1978.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Pynn and Janice Glidden, both of Spokane; four granddaughters, five great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Bill Buechner Spokane

Memorial service for Robert William “Bill” Buechner, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Buechner, 82, died Sunday. He was born in Verona, Pa.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Philippine Islands.

He was a 30-year resident of the Spokane Valley and had worked as an aircraft inspector for the military.

Mr. Buechner was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Valley Elks Lodge No. 2328, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1435, Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 45, Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 44, Inland Empire Senior Golf Association and Liberty Lake Men’s Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean Buechner; three daughters, Anita Lawrence of Seattle, and Johanna Russell and Susan Chromey, both of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mark Kinney Mill Creek, Wash.

Memorial service for Mark C. Kinney, 34, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. A memorial gathering will be held Tuesday at Mr. Kinney’s home in Mill Creek from 3-5 p.m.

Mr. Kinney, who was born in Illinois, died Tuesday from Hodgkin’s cancer.

He grew up in Great Falls, Mont., and graduated from Charles Russell High School in 1979. He graduated from Montana State University in 1992.

Mr. Kinney worked as a tool design engineer with the Boeing Co., in Everett and lived nearby in Mill Creek.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, cycling, and skiing.

Survivors include his mother, Teresa Underwood of Rathdrum, Idaho; his father, Ray Kinney of California; one sister, Rene Brooks of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and two brothers, Russell of Liberty Lake and Paul of Great Falls.

Memorials may be made to Snohomish County Hospice.

Harold Vaughn Spokane

Service for Harold Thomas Vaughn, 70, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Vaughn died Monday in an auto accident near Sierra Vista, Ariz. He was born in Paris, Mo., and was raised in Corvallis, Mont.

He served in the Army during World War II and moved to Spokane in 1945. He worked for the Great Northern Railway at Hillyard for 25 years as a telegrapher.

He sold cars for several years at McCollum Ford and Wendle Ford. He retired from sales at Wendle Ford in 1992, and until 1994, worked part time for Wendle as its shuttle driver.

Mr. Vaughn had been an umpire with the Spokane Metropolitan Softball Association during the 1950s and 1960s and was inducted into the Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Borsuk of Phoenix and Valerie Nesbitt of Spokane; one son, Thomas Vaughn of Reno, Nev.; and four grandchildren.

Florence Hinton Gladstone, Ore.

Graveside service for Florence Josephine Hinton, 83, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Spokane. Hillside Chapel Funeral Service in Oregon City, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hinton, a former longtime Spokane resident, died Monday in Gladstone, where she had lived for six months.

She was born in Richmond Hill, N.Y.

She was a homemaker and lived in Spokane from 1945 until 1995.

Her husband, William Hinton, died in 1989.

Mrs. Hinton is survived by one son, Charles Hinton of Spokane; two daughters, Joyce Smith of Spokane and Kathleen Meisner of Gladstone; one brother, John Welsford; and one sister, Agnes Hansen, both of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
