Cigar Wins 13th Straight

Cigar began 1996 the same way he finished last year - in first place.

Cigar, the newly christened Horse of the Year, coasted to his 13th consecutive victory by winning the $300,000 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park at Hallandale, Fla. The nation’s top thoroughbred gained ground on the record of 16 wins in a row held by 1948 Triple Crown winner Citation.

Cigar took the lead entering the stretch and finished two lengths ahead of stablemate Wekiva Springs.
