Dear Heloise: Isn’t it great fun to pass along helpful hints? I continue to be amazed at the simple things that can make life easier.

My contribution is another use for shower curtain rings. I hang them on my closet shelves and loop my scarves through. They are visible and adjacent to the clothes I am selecting to wear. - Susan Carpenter, Naples, Fla.

Dear Heloise: I have a cupboard in my kitchen that has masking-tape residue on it. The cupboard is painted white gloss.

I have tried various cleaners with no results. Can you help? - Renna Zeller, Phoenix, Ariz.

Test this easy fix first in a hidden area, to make sure it doesn’t alter the finish. Put some petroleum-based prewash spray over the area. You can tell if it’s petroleum-based by reading the ingredients on the container. Let it set for several minutes. Gently rub with a nylon net scrubbie or soft cloth, rubbing with the grain of the wood.

Wipe away the remaining residue with a clean, soft cloth. That should do it. - Heloise
