Caps Can’t Overcome Red Wings

Keith Primeau had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 in a battle of two of the NHL’s hottest teams.

The win was Detroit’s eighth straight at Joe Louis Arena, and moved the Wings to 9-1-1 in their last 11 games overall. Washington lost for the first time since Jan. 31, ending its unbeaten streak at six games.

Jeff Hackett made 36 saves for his fourth shutout and Bernie Nicholls scored two of Chicago’s three first-period goals, leading Chicago past Boston.

Jeremy Roenick, whose jaw was broken in St. Louis last week, returned to Chicago’s lineup after missing a game and assisted on both goals by Nicholls.

Theoren Fleury scored twice in Calgary’s win over New York.

Pavel Torgajev, Zarley Zalapski, Mike Sullivan and Sheldon Kennedy also scored for the Flames, who won for the first time in five tries at Nassau Coliseum since March 27, 1990.

Kevin Miller scored his 19th goal of the season 37 seconds into the final period to pull San Jose even with Ottawa.

Chris Tancill also scored for the Sharks. Pavol Demitra and Radek Bonk replied for the Senators.

Neither team posed a serious threat to break the tie in overtime. Senators defenseman Stan Neckar did pull away a puck destined for an open net about a foot from the goal-line with 2 minutes left in regulation.

Luc Robitaille, recently linked to trade rumors involving Wayne Gretzky, led a stirring rally in the last 6 minutes as New York tied Montreal, matching a team-record home unbeaten streak of 24 games.

Until Robitaille’s two dramatic goals at the end, the Rangers seemed all but assured of their first loss at the Garden since a 4-2 defeat by the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 22.

The Rangers have gone 18-0-6 since then, equaling the streak of 17-0-7 set in the 1970-71 season. The Canadiens hold the NHL record streak of 34 games.

Mercurical right wing Alexander Mogilny scored two goals, including the winner early in the third period, to give improving Vancouver a win over Anaheim.

Mogilny broke a 3-3 tie 48 seconds into the third period with a high shot from 40 feet, the first on backup goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov after he replaced starter Guy Hebert.
