New York Rangers Appear Out Of Gretzky Sweepstakes

Compiled From Wire Services

Scratch New York as Wayne Gretzky’s next home.

Though a trade is still said to be in the works, the New York Rangers said they aren’t getting him.

“I don’t foresee a trade for the New York Rangers,” general manager Neil Smith said before Thursday night’s game with the Montreal Canadiens.

But while the Rangers are now out of the chase, the Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly are interested in acquiring the Great One before the March 20 trading deadline.

The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Stewart Malgunas from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for forward Denis Chasse.
