UW Hands WSU Another Loss

Melissa Wuschnig scored 21 points, including 14 in the first 8 minutes, to lead the Washington Huskies past the visiting Washington State Cougars 78-60 Saturday night at Hec Edmundson Pavilion in a Pacific-10 Conference contest before a crowd of 5,402 at Seattle.

WSU (15-8, 6-6) lost for the third straight time despite a game-high 23 points from Jenni Ruff. Ruff also had 10 rebounds to collect her 10th double-double of the year.

Washington State’s effort was hurt by a season-high 31 turnovers.

Washington (13-10, 7-5) snapped a three-game losing streak. Wuschnig connected on three 3-pointers early and had 17 points at halftime.

Joy Pauley scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulldogs snapped a nine-game losing streak by defeating the Toreros in West Coast Conference play at Martin Centre.

Gonzaga (4-20, 2-10), which led by two points at the break, outscored San Diego (10-14, 4-8) 34-25 in the second half. The Toreros led briefly, 35-34, with 18:52 to play, but Staci Andrews scored two baskets to key a 6-0 run and the Bulldogs led the rest of the way.

Rebecca Moore finished with 15 points and nine assists for Whitworth (8-16, 6-8).
