Meetings Will Explain Disaster Relief
Disaster recovery officials will visit with local officials this week and next to explain how they can apply for help with the damage caused by this month’s flooding.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Management Division will be at the Adams County building and planning office in Othello at 3 p.m. today.
At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, they will meet with Columbia County officials at the federal building in Dayton. They will meet with Asotin and Garfield County officials in the Asotin County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m. and with Whitman County officials at 7 p.m. in the commissioner’s chambers at 404 No. Main St. in Colfax.
The meetings are meant to help public and qualified non-profit agencies clean up and repair public facilities. Federal money can pay as much as 75 percent of the cost of repairs made by local governments and districts.
While the meetings are open to the public, private citizens seeking assistance are encouraged to call 1-800-462-9029 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
People who want to follow up on an application can call the FEMA help line at 1-800-525-0321.
Citizens who want to meet face to face with FEMA officials can visit a disaster assistance recovery center in the Walla Walla Department of Transportation Building at Republic and G streets.
The agency is still evaluating whether it should establish a center in Whitman County, said Phil Kirk, a FEMA spokesman.
