Pepperdine Hires Romar

Lorenzo Romar, in his fourth season as an assistant coach at UCLA, has been hired as the head basketball coach at Pepperdine, effective at the end of the season.

Romar, 37, succeeds Tony Fuller, who resigned suddenly as Pepperdine’s coach on Jan. 20.

Massachusetts (25-0) remains the No. 1 team in the Associated Press men’s basketball poll for the ninth straight week with 60 first-place votes and 1,644 points.

Kentucky (22-1) remains second with five No. 1 votes and 1,587 points, while Connecticut (24-1), which received one first-place vote, Villanova, Kansas and Cincinnati also kept their spots from last week’s voting.

Gonzaga and Montana each received one vote each.

Oregon guard Kenya Wilkins, who led the Ducks to victories over Stanford and California, was named the Pac-10 men’s basketball player of the week.

Idaho State guard Ron Harwell was selected the Big Sky player of the week after helping the Bengals to wins against Weber State and Northern Arizona.
