Regionals On Line In Gsl Playoffs Today

Postseason basketball begins tonight for eight Greater Spokane League teams in the Arena, and ends tonight for four of them.

Winners in the District 8 Tournament advance to the Region IV Tournament next week, which means survivors can play at least four more games.

Girls games today are: No. 3 Central Valley (13-3, 16-3) vs. No. 6 University (7-9, 9-10) at 3:45 and No. 4 Shadle Park (8-8, 11-9) vs. No. 5 Gonzaga Prep (7-9, 11-9) at 7:15.

The first boys game is No. 3 Mead (9-7, 11-9) vs. No. 6 Shadle Park (8-8, 10-11) at 5:30 with No. 4 Lewis and Clark (9-7, 13-7) vs. No. 5 Gonzaga Prep (9-7, 13-7) at 9 p.m.

The survivors join the top two teams from the regular season for seeding games into the regional tournament. Thursday’s games determine who gets home-court advantage for the first round of regionals, which are in the Tri-Cities for the second straight year after being held for seven years in Spokane.

The No. 2 seeds are the Ferris girls (14-2, 17-3) and Central Valley boys (10-6, 13-7). The No. 1 seeds are the Mead girls (15-1, 18-2) and the Ferris boys (14-2, 18-2).

On Thursday, the No. 2 seeds play the highest surviving seed from today’s games, the girls going at 3:45 and the boys at 5:30. The No. 1 seeds play the lowest remaining seed, the girls at 7:15 and the boys at 9.

Final seeding games are Friday, in the same order for boys and girls, the championship games are last.

The Big Nine district tournament has a different format and games are Thursday and Saturday.

In the past 19 years of the GSL, only three times did a boys team in sixth place have an 8-8 record, although the district tournament hasn’t always taken the top six teams.

This year, Shadle Park and University tied for sixth at 8-8, and the Highlanders won the tie-breaker game 50-48 on Saturday. That put Shadle into tonight’s game against Mead just five days after University beat Mead by 15.
