Wcc Honors Zags’ Rollins

Gonzaga guard Lorenzo Rollins is the West Coast Conference men’s basketball player of the week.

The junior from Tacoma fueled the Bulldogs’ first WCC road sweep of the season that enabled them to maintain a first-place tie with Santa Clara. Both teams are 9-3 heading into this weekend, which will be capped by Saturday night’s head-to-head season finale at GU.

Rollins scored a career-high 29 points at San Francisco, 21 in the second half. He went 10 for 19 from the field, 7 of 13 from 3-point range. The seven 3-pointers were one shy of the school record. He came back with 17 points Saturday at San Diego.

For the two games, he was 16 of 35 from the field, including 10 of 19 from 3-point range.

Whitworth will take a No. 5 NAIA Division II national ranking into their first-round Northwest Conference playoff game Wednesday night in the Pirates Fieldhouse.

The Whitworth men, who swept two games last weekend to win the regular-season title, gain the No. 1 seed into the playoffs and retain their No. 5 national spot.

Whitworth (20-4) entertains fourth-seeded Linfield (11-13) at 7. The other first-round game has No. 3 Pacific Lutheran (12-11) at No. 2 Lewis & Clark (15-8). LC moved into the Top 25 poll this week at No. 24.

Track and field

Matt Kerr of Kennewick, who finished fourth at the State AAA cross country championships last fall and was preparing for the track season, is hospitalized with two shattered kneecaps and other injuries after an auto accident.

A car driven by Kerr, 17, a senior at Kennewick High School, was hit head-on shortly before midnight Saturday on a foggy and wet night. Kerr also suffered a broken arm, a collapsed lung and a broken jaw.

Baseball

Final signups for Lakeland Little League will be held Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m. at John Brown Elementary in Rathdrum.
