Snow Sport Report

Compiled By Vince Dice

Alpine skiing

It’s official: Ski Bluewood is closed for the season due to flood damage that knocked out bridges to the mountain.

Silver Mountain hosts the First Security Winter Games the next two weekends, with slalom races Saturday (starts at 11 a.m., registration $10-$15) and snowboarding races March 2. Anyone may enter regardless of experience level. Info - (208) 783-1111, ext. 316.

Schweitzer offers a busy weekend. Intermediate snowboarders can take a carving and high speed control class Saturday, while speed freaks can participate in two USSA races (Saturday and Sunday, $15, age 25 and up). Info - (208) 263-0775.

Nordic skiing

Don’t bother going to Newport. Wolf trail has no snow and Geo is bare in spots. The forecast calls for more snow this weekend, but Newport would need quite a bit to make skiing a possibility.

Do bother going to Mt. Spokane, Methow Valley or the Priest Lake area. All are still grooming on most of their trails. Go to the higher trails at Priest Lake, Old Floom is described as “marginal.”

The biathalon scheduled for Methow this weekend was canceled due to lack of interest.

Snowmobiling Priest Lake State Park got more snow this week, covering up the icy spots that caused concern last week. Enjoy it while it lasts.
