Post Falls Bumped From Postseason

The Post Falls High School boys basketball team, hoping to advance to state through the back door for a second straight year, had the door slammed in its face Saturday.

Capital of Boise blew open the A-1 cross-district playoff game in the first half and the Eagles protected their lead in the second half for an 89-74 win at Grangeville High School.

The Eagles (16-9) will meet 1995 state runner-up Rigby (18-6) in the first round Thursday at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena. Post Falls finishes the season at 12-10.

Capital led 23-18 after a fast-paced first period, then the Eagles broke away by outscoring the Trojans 28-13 in the second quarter. Capital led 51-31 at halftime.

The Eagles held their lead at the free-throw line, where the Trojans were forced to send Capital in the second half. The Eagles made 25 of 33 foul shots to Post Falls’ 29 of 40 in a game that featured 60 fouls.

Four Eagles landed in double figures, led by guard Joey Hobson’s game-high 33 points. Jeff Doan had 14, Brad Lords had 12 and Michael Evans added 11.

The Trojans put three players in double figures. Junior 6-foot-5 post Austin Lee led with 20, sophomore guard Chad Quesnell had 17 and senior wing Brett Hollenbeck added 12.

A stifling zone defense smothered Wallace’s state-tournament hopes.

Wallace led 25-23 at halftime, but the Bulldogs used a matchup zone in the final two quarters to eliminate the Miners in an A-3 cross-district playoff at Moscow Junior High School.

The Miners nearly went the entire third quarter without scoring. Ryan Nipp gave Wallace its lone points in the period when he made two free throws with 15 seconds left. Grangeville (17-7) outscored Wallace 15-2 in the period.

“It’s fitting,” said Wallace coach Dick Lilienkamp, whose team finishes 8-12. “It’s been happening all year. Ordinarily we’ve been playing better against zones. But we never adjusted to it.”

Jeremiah Jones led Grangeville (17-7) with 25 points.
