A subpar Boris Becker lost to Czech Bohdan Ulihrach at the Italian Indoors in Milan, Italy. Becker, weakened by flu and moving slowly on the court, made a series of unforced errors in the 6-4, 6-2 upset.
Vic Janowicz, a Heisman Trophy winner who went on to become a two-sport player in the pros, died Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio. He was 66. Janowicz, a single-wing halfback and defensive back at Ohio State, played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball and the Washington Redskins in football. He won the Heisman in 1950. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October of 1990, but continued to lead an active life.
Wichita State basketball coach Scott Thompson negotiated a $210,000 buyout of his contract before resigning after the worst season in team history (8-21). Thompson announced his resignation after Tuesday night’s 61-60 loss to Oral Roberts.
