Huskies Beat Colorado; Off To Best Start Since ‘91

Mark Sanford scored 23 points, 17 in the second half, and Bryant Boston added 20 as the Washington Huskies beat the Colorado Buffaloes 76-68 Tuesday night in Seattle for their fourth victory in a row.

The Huskies (7-2), off to their best start since they opened the 1991 season at 9-1, got 14 points from Jason Hamilton, who made six free throws in the final 33 seconds.

The Buffaloes (5-5) were led by Mack Tuck’s 17 points. Freshman guard Chauncey Billups, the Big Eight’s leading scorer with a 22.3 scoring average coming into the game, was held to four points on 1-for-7 shooting.

(4) Kansas 100, Cornell 46

In Lawrence, Kan., Jacque Vaughn scored 16 points and a pressing defense complemented by superior size inside led Kansas past Cornell.

(8) Villanova 76, Notre Dame 57 Alvin Williams tied his career-high with 22 points to lead the Wildcats over the visiting Fighting Irish in Big East play at Villanova, Penn.

Kerry Kittles added 17 points for Villanova (3-0 Big East, 11-1). Pat Garrity led the Irish (0-3, 5-5) with 16 points.

(12) Wake Forest 81, Furman 49

In Winston-Salem, N.C., Tim Duncan snapped Wake Forest out of the doldrums by powering a second-half surge that sent the Demon Deacons (7-1) to victory over the Paladins (2-8).

(15) Utah 83, BYU 77

In Salt Lake City, Keith Van Horn scored 29 points as the Utes (9-2) held off the Cougars (6-4) in a Western Athletic Conference opener.

Bryon Ruffner scored eight points around three free throws by Utah’s Brandon Jessie to pull the Cougars to within 66-64 with 4:44 to play. However, the Utes scored the next seven points.

San Diego 67, Northern Arizona 60

Brian Miles scored 11 points, all in the second half, to lead the Toreros (5-5) to a victory over the visiting Lumberjacks (3-7).

Miles scored nine straight points during a 13-2 second-half run.

Montana 74, Black Hills St. 62

At Missoula, Shawn Samuelson scored 18 points and Nate Colvill grabbed 14 rebounds as the Grizzlies defeated the NAIA Yellow Jackets in a nonconference game.

USF 85, Stanislaus St. 70

Booker T. Washington scored 18 points to lead San Francisco (7-5) to a come-from-behind win over visiting Stanislaus State (2-10).

Rhode Island 81, St. Mary’s 74

Tyson Wheeler’s 30 points, including three consecutive 3-pointers in the second half, led the Rams (8-3) to a victory over the host Gaels (5-4).
