Auburn Fires Defensive Coach

Compiled From Wire Services

In Auburn, Ala., the Tigers fired assistant coach Wayne Hall, who built the Auburn’s defense into one of the nation’s best during the 1980s but saw it crumble this season.

Hall said head coach Terry Bowden met with him at the start of bowl practice and asked him to “look elsewhere for employment.” The Tigers capped a disappointing 8-4 season with a 43-14 loss to Penn State in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

In Austin, Texas, the NCAA said it is convinced that Texas officials had no idea a 30-year-old football player had changed his identity to extend his college eligibility.

David Berst, director of enforcement at the NCAA, said there were no plans to investigate how Ron Weaver managed to enroll at Texas as 23-year-old Joel Ron McKelvey and play a limited role as a backup cornerback for the Longhorns this season.
