G-Prep Wins Latest Ot Duel With Cv
GSL boys
Picking up where they left off last year, Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley went into overtime to decide a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game.
Picking up where the football season left off, it took a lastsecond tackle for Prep to escape with a 55-54 win at the Arena Friday night.
The Bullpups were ahead by one point when Joe McFarland missed two foul shots with 5.3 seconds left. The Bears rebounded and Josh Nesbitt took a breakaway pass, heading for a layup when Prep’s Paul Sweeny stumbled into him from behind, both crashing to the floor with 0.1 seconds left - and traveling was called.
That ended another wild game between these two teams, which played two overtime games last year with CV winning both.
“There’s nothing you can say,” CV coach Terry Irwin said. “We had our chances when the game was being played.”
CV’s chances were best when the Bears (3-3, 5-4) took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Prep’s full-court press turned the game into a nail-biter.
Prep scrambled back to lead 51-49 when CV’s Corby Schuh was fouled when throwing up a 3-point shot with 6.4 seconds left. He missed the middle free throw, forcing the overtime.
Prep (3-2, 7-2) made 4 of 6 foul shots opening the extra session before Jeff Allen pushed in a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one.
“We definitely needed that,” Prep coach Mike Haugen said. “We’ve been giving up leads. It’s about time we took one, and that’s what we did. At the fourth quarter break they believed they were going to come back.”
Brian Herrin and Sweeny led the charge, combining for 15 of Prep’s 18 points and five rebounds in the last 8 minutes and helped a defense that forced eight turnovers.
“I wasn’t playing very aggressive in the first half,” Sweeny said. “We just needed some leadership in the second half; we needed someone to step up.”
That’s what CV’s Irwin is waiting for.
“They pressured us and we didn’t handle it well. That’s our inexperience,” he said. “We had no leadership, that’s what we talked about. We did some great things for three quarters against a good basketball team. We controlled the tempo. Then their experience showed over our inexperience.”
Sweeny said the Bullpups are still waiting for a complete game.
“It’s not a matter if we could do it, it’s a matter if we wanted to do it,” he said. “We don’t play well unless we have to. We’re not at the point where we’re playing well for four quarters. Once we do that we’ll be a tough team.”

D.J. Vick snared a loose ball out of the air and flipped it into the basket with 2.6 seconds left to give the Tigers (4-2, 8-2) the win over the Titans (3-3, 6-4) at the Arena.
U-Hi set up a perfect out-of-bounds play to draw a foul with 1.1 seconds left, but it was only the fourth foul of the half and seventh for the game on LC. Then, a last-ditch, full-court pass was batted away at the buzzer.
The Titans did not shoot a free throw in the game.
Paul Mencke fired in 15 points as LC led 24-22 at halftime. Erik Carlson had six in the third quarter when U-Hi took a 37-35 lead. It was a Carlson basket with 40 seconds to play that set up the final sequence, when Mike Homer’s shot from the foul line was blocked with the clock dipping to less than 5 seconds.
