Jacobson Foils Post Falls Upset Lake City Senior An Unexpected Heroine As Timberwolves Pull Out 64-61 Victory
The play wasn’t necessarily drawn for guard Kristi Jacobson, but the Lake City senior saw an opening on the baseline and drove to the basket.
Jacobson’s layup not only went in with 14.6 seconds left in Friday night’s Inland Empire League girls basketball game, but she picked up a foul on Post Falls star Heidi Umthun. After a Trojans’ timeout, Jacobson converted the three-point play for a 63-60 lead, and the Timberwolves held on for a 64-61 victory.
“That’s not the one we normally would expect to be taking the game-winning shot,” Post Falls coach Chris Johnson admitted of Jacobson. “She deserves a lot of credit for executing that play.”
Jacobson’s shot snapped a 60-60 deadlock, one of six ties in a well-played game that featured 13 lead changes.
“(Umthun) left it open for me, so I took it,” Jacobson said. “I wasn’t supposed to (shoot), only if I had a layin. (The free throw) was weird; their crowd wasn’t screaming. I took it and shot it. I knew I had to make it.”
Lake City (4-1, 10-5) wasted a 10-point lead in the last 3 minutes of the second quarter.
A steal and layup by freshman Janelle Ruen pulled the Trojans to within 31-27 just 10 seconds before halftime.
As the teams left the court for the break, Umthun stepped to the free-throw line and sank two shots to leave the Trojans down 31-29.
Post Falls (1-3, 8-6) kept pace in the second half behind Umthun and Ruen, who combined for 27 points.
Umthun, who played with the flu and suffered a broken nose in the second quarter, finished with a game-high 32 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Post Falls travels to Lewiston today. Lake City is at Bonners Ferry.
