Lewiston Edges Coeur D’Alene

Boys basketball

Lewiston reserve Kevin Lawrence sank two free throws with 14 seconds left to lift the Bengals past Coeur d’Alene 71-68 in an Inland Empire League boys basketball game on Friday night at Booth Hall.

The Vikings (0-1, 5-5) led most of the game played before an estimated 1,100 fans.

Guard Ben Davis nailed three 3-point field goals in the second quarter, as Coeur d’Alene battled for a 40-32 lead.

“Defensively we played much better in third quarter,” Bengals coach Dick Richel said.

The Vikings, who shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, made just 3 of 13 field goals in the third quarter.

Coeur d’Alene led by two points with just under 2 minutes left in the game. An offensive rebound conversion by Jim Farris tied the game and set the stage for Lawrence’s heroics.

“He’s only shot four free throws all season,” Richel said of Lawrence. “They were giant free throws, because (the Vikings are) so difficult to defend in the open court.”

“It’s a nice start to a league,” Richel added. The Bengals improved to 1-0 and 4-7.

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Wallace in a non-league game tonight.
