Mario Lemieux Fighting Fatigue

Compiled From Wire Services

NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux, who sat out last season for health reasons following five years of back problems and a bout with cancer, is battling fatigue.

Lemieux, who has remained in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ lineup despite the problem, is awaiting the results of tests that will determine if his thyroid gland is underactive.

The condition is common among those who have undergone radiation treatment, as Lemieux did during his 1993 battle with Hodgkin’s disease.

NHL governors have approved a plan to help Canadian teams overcome a weak dollar in dealings with their United States counterparts.

The plan, discussed at a governors meeting last month, was approved unanimously during the past week. It will allow Canadian-based teams to receive money from league-generated revenue streams like television, licensing and sponsorships if they meet certain criteria.

Goalie Andy Moog went on the injured reserve list and will be lost to the Dallas Stars for four weeks after surgery on his right knee.
