Cheney Girls Start Quickly In Pursuit Of Another Title

After one week of Frontier League basketball, Cheney’s girls appear primed for a repeat performance.

Anna Getz had 15 rebounds and eight assists Saturday as the defending champion Blackhawks (2-0, 8-2) earned a 55-44 win over visiting East Valley (1-1, 4-4), which figures to be one of Cheney’s top pursuers. Cheney has won seven straight.

Cheney led 32-29 in the third quarter when it began a 16-5 streak over 6 minutes.

Cheney 76, East Valley 52 Tucker Urdahl hit four 3-pointers on the way to 22 points and added six assists and four steals as the Blackhawks (1-1, 3-6) beat the visiting Knights (0-2, 2-6).

Rick DeMulling added 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Wrestling

By pushing five wrestlers into the championship finals, and winning titles at 135 and 141 pounds, Sentinel of Missoula won Saturday’s Pacific Northwest Classic wrestling tournament at University High.

Sentinel scored 141.5 points to outdistance the 116 points tallied by the host Titans. Palmer, Alaska, (111.5) and Gonzaga Prep (106.5) came next in line at the 12-team tournament.

Palmer’s Gabe McMahann, who pinned Rick Giampietri of Central Valley at 158, was named outstanding wrestler.

Gordon Bash (101) and Andy Roberts (129) of U-Hi, James Clark (148) of Mead and CV’s Bob Perkes (275) won titles.

Pins by freshman Brandon Morris (108), Joben Nuesse (122), Dan Kruger (158) and Jared Bailey (178) helped Riverside celebrate its Frontier League debut with a 45-30 win at Pullman (0-2).
