Focused Lake City Blurs Past Lakeland
One may find this difficult to believe, but Lake City High School boys basketball coach Jim Winger took his team’s non-league game Saturday night against winless Lakeland as seriously as he had the league opener the night before.
His pregame speech wasn’t Vince Lombardi, but Winger cautioned his team not to come out flat.
To Winger’s satisfaction, the Timberwolves were anything but lackluster as they snared the Hawks 65-35 at Lake City.
Winger reminded his team before tipoff that Lakeland had more than just its first victory to play for. Late in the football season, Lake City scored the first win in school history at the expense of Lakeland.
As it turned out, Winger’s concerns were probably exaggerated. Lakeland lost its ninth straight game and suffered its 16th consecutive defeat dating to last season. The Hawks’ last win came Jan. 24, 1995, against East Valley (59-53).
Lake City stretched its overall record to 8-3.
“We needed something like that,” Winger said of the opportunity to play all 12 players. “We shot very poorly, but we hustled our way through it, which is a good sign after a league game Friday. Mentally, we were there.”
Lakeland coach Mike Bayley may have been slightly distracted as his wife was at home, poised to deliver their second child. But he saw enough to determine his team didn’t play with much inspiration.
“In the seven games that I’ve been to, that’s the first one that I felt we didn’t compete,” said Bayley, who missed his team’s first two games while recovering from pneumonia. “I’m disappointed with that. I’m pretty surprised, too, because we’re tired of losing.”
LC held Lakeland to its lowest offensive outing (by eight points).
The T-Wolves built a 14-2 lead through the opening 5 minutes. Reserve guard Francis Camantigue’s 32-foot buzzer-beater gave LC a 19-7 lead after the first quarter.
Another similar run in the second period, capped by a 3-pointer from Mike Asper, extended LC’s lead to 33-11 with 3:32 remaining before halftime. The advantage grew to 25 points late in the half.
Jon Chatfield hit a baseline jumper around a screen to give LC its widest margin in the third period, 46-18. Lakeland cut the deficit to 49-27 by quarter’s end.
Chatfield led LC with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Scott Hoover had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Paul Kowalczyk led Lakeland with eight points.
LC returns to action Tuesday with a league game at Sandpoint before returning home Friday for the first crosstown battle with Coeur d’Alene.
Lakeland plays host to Rathdrum Prairie-rival Post Falls on Tuesday.
