Gu Women Try Harder, Beat Ewu

Gonzaga got back into the win column with an impressive 73-62 victory over Eastern Washington in women’s non-league basketball Saturday night at Martin Centre.

“Finally.” said Gonzaga coach Kellee Barney. “We played hard and we played smart. It feels good to get another win.”

It was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout the first half. Gonzaga (2-10) jumped to a 9-2 lead on a pair of Joy Pauley 3-pointers and a three-point play by Chelsea Herman.

The Eagles (2-9) hung tough mainly because of Nicole King’s work underneath the basket. King scored 10 first-half points and her free throw with 5:54 left in the half gave Eastern a 22-21 lead.

It turned out to be the Eagles’ only lead of the game.

Gonzaga went on a 13-6 run to take a 34-27 advantage at the half.

The Bulldogs picked up where they left off at the start of the second half, outscoring Eastern 18-10 over the first 10 minutes. The Eagles would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Barney said two adjustments at halftime were keys for the Bulldogs.

“We needed to stop their scoring on the pick-and-roll play.” she noted. “And we needed to attack more offensively. I thought we did a much better job of that in the second half.”

Eastern coach Heidi VanDerveer was disappointed with her team’s effort. “We needed to come out and play hard and play with a lot of heart, but we didn’t,” she said. “That’s one thing we haven’t really done this whole year.”

King finished with 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Eastern.

Gonzaga was led by the 18 points of Heidi Phillips. Herman and Pauley each scored 15 points while former Selkirk High School star Sandy Gere scored 13.
