Snowstorm Postpones Sonics Game
One of the hardest snowstorms to hit the East in 70 years resulted in the postponement of two NBA games Sunday night and forced the Philadelphia Eagles to spend another night in a city they would just as soon leave.
The NBA said the two games Atlanta at New Jersey and Seattle at New York - will be made up at undetermined dates.
The Eagles were hoping to escape Dallas on Sunday night after losing 30-11 to the Cowboys in an NFC playoff game. But harsh weather in Philadelphia meant the team had to delay its flight home until today.
The storm closed the major airports for Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., and New York City. States of emergency were declared in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey.
The Seattle SuperSonics, stranded in a New York luxury hotel next to Central Park, were hoping the airports would reopen in time for them to make today’s flight to Milwaukee, where they are scheduled to play the Bucks on Tuesday.
Two college basketball games in volving ranked teams also were postponed by the knee-deep snow: St. Joseph’s at No. 18 Virginia Tech and No. 11 Syracuse at Rutgers. No reschedulings were announced.
