First nudist organization of record in the United States, the American League of Physical Culture, only dates back to Dec. 4, 1929. Nudists met earlier, certainly. They just didn’t go downtown and tell everybody.

In the Paris of 1370, hardly anybody ever knew what time it was. Church bells rang whenever the whim hit the ringers. The King, Charles V, said, “Listen, you guys, from now on, you ring when our royal ringers ring. That’ll not only mark the time, but the same time all over town. Let’s get in sync.” Or words to that effect. His edict established the western world’s first time service.
