Two Arrested After Fight Following Arraignment
Two people were arrested after a courthouse brawl broke out following the arraignment of a teenager in the stabbing death of another teen.
Family and friends of the defendant, Jerry Garcia, and victim, Arturo Williams, Jr., began fighting in a lobby shortly after Monday’s hearing in Grant County Superior Court, sheriff’s officers said. No weapons were used.
Deputies and corrections officers broke up the fight. One man suffered a skinned nose, chief deputy Jerry Butler said.
Jimmy Mata, Williams’ 19-year-old cousin, was arrested for investigation of disorderly conduct and was released Monday from the Grant County Jail on $250 bail.
Jerry Garcia Sr., the defendant’s 44-year-old father, was arrested for investigation of fourth-degree assault and was released on his own recognizance Tuesday following his arraignment.
Garcia’s son, Jerry Garcia Jr., 17, was arraigned on a second-degree murder count and was jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail. He was scheduled to enter a plea Jan. 15.
The stabbing occurred during a fight Saturday between Garcia and Williams, authorities allege.Williams died of four stab wounds. Garcia turned himself in to police, authorities said.
