Chechen Fighters Free Some Hostages

Associated Press

Chechen fighters holding more than 100 hostages in an icy, wind-swept village freed about a dozen Friday and pledged to release the rest if four top Russian officials take their place.

Pinned by Russian troops, the Chechen rebels reiterated threats to shoot the hostages, including women and children, unless they are guaranteed safe passage back to their separatist republic.

But four days after the hostage situation began, the Russian government showed no sign of compromising on its demand that all captives be released before any negotiating takes place.

Two of the Russian officials quickly agreed to the rebel offer. The other two refused.
