College Basketball Tonight
WSU at Oregon State
The Cougars (7-4, 0-3 Pac-10) hope to snap a three-game skid and prevent the Beavers (1-1, 3-8) from posting their first home sweep of the Washington schools since 1991. Tipoff is set for 4:07 p.m. at Gill Coliseum.
At a glance: Perhaps the most interesting angle about this game is that former Cougars coach George Raveling will handle the color commentary on Prime Sports Northwest’s live telecast. Otherwise, there isn’t much to recommend. WSU figured to be a lock to beat the Beavers prior to the start of the Pac-10 season, but without Mark Hendrickson (broken hand) and Donminic Ellison (academic suspension), the Cougars might find themselves hard-pressed to sneak past the Beavers. First-year OSU coach Eddie Payne picked up a surprise win over Washington Thursday night and hopes the confidence his young team gained will carry over into this afternoon’s matchup. Payne has only one player - sophomore guard Rob Williams - averaging more than 10 points a game, and he doesn’t even start. WSU coach Kevin Eastman used to boast four starters averaging in double figures, but now he has only two. The losses of Hendrickson inside and Ellison at the point leave junior guard Isaac Fontaine as the Cougars’ leading scorer, rebounder and assist man.
Leaders: WSU: Isaac Fontaine 19.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.3 apg; Shamon Antrum 13.3 ppg. OREGON STATE: Rob Williams 12.0 ppg; Markee Brown 9.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.9 apg.
