Mead Subdues Central Valley, 56-46

GSL girls

Mead and Central Valley traded blows - maybe turnovers, fouls, bricks and great plays is more accurate - for 27 minutes, but it was the remaining 5 minutes that made the difference.

Mead’s third-ranked Panthers controlled No. 7 CV for the first 5 minutes of the second half to get the needed cushion in fashioning a 56-46 victory in a Greater Spokane League girls basketball game at the Arena Friday night.

“I thought in the second half we got in a little better sync,” Mead coach Jeanne Helfer said. “Defensively, we played really good the first 4 minutes out and controlled the boards. Everything starts for us on defense.”

The Panthers didn’t bury the Bears by any means by shutting them out for more than 5 minutes to start the third quarter. They only scored six points for a measly 32-26 lead. But, from that point, every time CV charged, Mead answered.

CV (6-2, 9-2) closed to within two points after Rikki Jackson scored off a great in-bounds play, but Stacy Clinesmith responded with a reverse layup and, after a CV miss, Holly Turner knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to push the score to 37-30.

“In the second half we turned it up a bit, but they keep coming at you,” Helfer said. “You come away feeling you didn’t play very well, but that’s because they keep coming after you.”

Mead was up 37-31 entering the fourth quarter. Clinesmith hit a 3-pointer, but CV crawled back with five straight free throws. It was Clinesmith, with two free throws, and Turner, with another 3, that allowed Mead to weather the storm.

“We expected them to come out and play like they always do - tough,” said Clinesmith, who finished with 21 points. “We expected it to be a good game and it was.”

CV’s Crystal Lee, the league’s leading scorer at 20 points a game, was held to 10, all in the first half.

“We got beat, that’s it,” was CV coach Dale Poffenroth’s terse analysis.

CV finished with 22 turnovers and hit just 12 of 45 shots with four field goals in the second half, one in the third quarter. Mead (7-0, 10-1) wasn’t much better, with 19 turnovers, 15 in the first half, and 18-of-53 shooting.
