Late Pins Catapult Clarkston Over Riverside

Cory Thivierge’s pin at 178 pounds Tuesday turned the tide and allowed Clarkston to beat Riverside 42-33 in a Frontier League wrestling match at Chattaroy.

The Bantams (1-2) trailed 33-6 before Thivierge took the mat against Jared Bailey. Clarkston won the final six matches - four by pin and two by forfeit.

Joben Nuesse (122) of the Rams (1-2) had a 15-0 technical fall over John Call.

Elsewhere, East Valley (3-0) flattened visiting Pullman 67-10 to tie idle Colville for first place.

EV’s Ben Wise (215) edged Terry Line 9-7 with a late escape and penalty point. Brandon McGreevy of the Knights pinned Brian Ruchert at 141 after leading 27-12. Pullman is 0-4.

Leading the way

Chewelah’s boys and the St. John-Endicott girls are ranked No. 1 in the second Associated Press prep basketball poll of the season.

Chewelah (9-2) received four first-place votes in the Class A balloting while SJE (13-0) picked up six in the Class B.

Chewelah’s losses are to AAA teams at the Bellevue Tournament. SJE is the area’s lone unbeaten team, boys or girls.

Ranked second in the poll are the Mead girls (10-1), AAA; Colfax girls (11-1), A; Wilbur-Creston girls (14-1), B; and Almira/Coulee-Hartline boys (10-1), B.
