Former Spokane Chief Jon Klemm scored 48 seconds into the game and Peter Forsberg added the eventual game-winner in the third period as Colorado held off New York.

The Avalanche totaled 37 shots against Tommy Salo (1-5-1), who was the IHL rookie and player of the year last season for the Denver Grizzlies.

Mario Lemieux scored a short-handed breakaway goal at 1:54 of overtime as Pittsburgh overcame a two-goal deficit in the last minute of regulation and beat Boston.

Lemieux took the puck from Jon Rohloff at the blue line and put his 42nd goal over Bill Ranford’s glove on Pittsburgh’s only shot in the overtime.
