Umass Remains At Top Of Polls
Massachusetts, the only unbeaten Division I team, remained No. 1 in the men’s college basketball poll, but the Minutemen’s grip on the top spot slipped a bit.
Last week, Massachusetts (16-0) was picked first on all but two of the ballots from a nationwide media panel. This week the Minutemen received just 52 points more than second-ranked Kentucky.
Kansas and Connecticut each moved up one spot to third and fourth, while Cincinnati, which lost its first game of the season on Sunday to Alabama-Birmingham, dropped two spots to fifth.
Louisiana Tech (16-1), which was voted the top-ranked women’s basketball team for the 10th straight week, may fall in the polls after losing to No. 4 Tennessee (16-3) 77-72 at Knoxville, Tenn., Monday.
The Lady Techsters are followed in the polls by Georgia and Connecticut.
Marcus Camby, eight days after his mysterious collapse, practiced with Massachusetts and will decide at the last minute whether he is ready to play tonight at Pittsburgh.
At El Paso, Texas, UTEP coach Don Haskins, who has been hospitalized since his heart attack during a game last weekend, will have double bypass surgery and may miss the rest of the season.
