Hawks Win 10th Straight, Silence Shaq

Associated Press

NBA

The Atlanta Hawks won their 10th game in a row Friday night, holding Shaquille O’Neal without a basket in the second half as they pulled away for a 96-84 victory over the Orlando Magic at Atlanta.

Steve Smith scored 22 points and Mookie Blaylock added 21 for Atlanta, but once again it was the Hawks’ defense that decided the game. O’Neal, after scoring 12 points in the first quarter and 16 in the opening half, managed only four points in the final two periods.

Lucas can rest easy

John Lucas will retain his titles as coach, general manager and vice president of basketball operations for the woeful Philadelphia 76ers, owner Harold Katz said.

“He has my full support,” said Katz, adding that Lucas would get the chance to finish the second year of his four-year contract before a decision would be made on his future.

Hawks to remain in Atlanta

After considering the possibility of moving to the suburbs, the Atlanta Hawks announced they will remain downtown in a new $200 million arena.

The 20,000-seat arena, which includes plans for 100 luxury boxes and 2,000 club seats, will be built on the site of the Hawks’ current home, the Omni, which will be demolished. The new arena likely would open in time for the 1999-2000 season.
