Whitworth Gets Win At Plu

Whitworth’s Nate Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining to give Whitworth College a 78-77 win over Pacific Lutheran University on Friday night at Tacoma.

PLU’s Andrew Mills missed a running 10-footer in the final seconds and the Pirates (13-3, 5-1 Northwest Conference) escaped with the win.

The Pirates led PLU late when Lutes freshman guard Torey Swanson came off the bench and hit a trio of 3-pointers to dig into the Pirates’ lead.

The Pirates’ Nate Dunham led Whitworth with 20 points while reserve guard Sean Weston scored 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. Weston was also 3 for 3 from the field.

PLU (7-9, 2-4) got its only lead of the game at 74-73 on an Erik Peterson free throw.

The Lutes’ (8-6, 3-3 Northwest Conference) women’s team held off a furious rally in the final minute by the Pirates (3-13, 1-5) at PLU’s Olson Auditorium.

Pacific led 57-48 with 1:20 left before Jennifer Tissue led a Whitworth charge that cut the lead to 60-58 with 11 seconds left.

PLU’s Anna Nelson hit the first of two free throws to give the Lutes a 61-58 lead. Tissue, who scored three baskets down the stretch for the Pirates, then missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.

Tissue led all scorers with 24 points and teammate Sherri Northington led all rebounders with 19.
