Stack up the odds on this one: Aundria Howerton hadn’t attempted a shot, played roughly five minutes in the first half and only the final 35 seconds of the second half.
Nonetheless, Howerton hit a 3- pointer with 20 ticks remaining to power the North Idaho College women’s basketball team to a thrilling 68-67 win over Scenic West Athletic Conference rival Ricks on Saturday night at Christianson Gym.
NIC’s Tanya Kirk rejected Emily Freeze’s shot with 5 seconds left to preserve a win Coach Greg Crimp termed “”the biggest” in his two years.
The Cardinals improved to 5-4 in the SWAC, 15-4 overall. Ricks (13-6, 6-3 ) saw a six-game SWAC winning streak end.
“I liked that one,” Crimp said. “That’s probably the best we’ve played in my two years.”
Backup forward Jana Nearing and post Shawna Rainer delivered huge second halves as NIC rallied from three down with 10:40 leftin the second half.
Ricks’ post Kris Packer scored 18 points, 14 in the first half. Riley and Shelby Benson, a key to the Vikings uptempo offense, each had 15.
