Rangers Roll; Unbeaten Streak At 8

Associated Press

NHL

Rangers 5, Bruins 3

Boston

Pat Verbeek and Mark Messier scored key goals as New York raced to a 3-0 lead and then hung to extend its unbeaten streak to eight games.

Verbeek put the Rangers ahead with his 34th goal, the only score of the first period at 13:11 on New York’s first shot of the game on goalie Bill Ranford.

After the Bruins had trimmed the lead to 3-2, Messier skated in on a partial breakaway with Jozef Stumpel hanging onto him and beat Ranford with his 35th goal of the season. The Bruins pulled within a goal again 4-3, but Messier added his 36th goal at 17:35 of the final period.
