Washington Barely Hangs On To Claim Big Victory Over Cal
Pac-10
Todd MacCulloch’s layup gave Washington a 10-point lead with 3:47 left and the Huskies held on to beat No. 25 California 71-69 in a Pacific-10 Conference game Saturday at Seattle.
The Golden Bears scored the last eight points and missed three shots in the final 10 seconds in an attempt to tie the score.
Washington (12-4, 5-2) won its third in a row and has its best record at this stage of a season since it was 13-3 in 1984. The Huskies haven’t had a winning season since 1987.
With only 1 second on the shot clock, MacCulloch caught the inbounds pass from Jamie Booker under the Cal basket and scored what proved to be the Huskies’ winning basket.
The Bears (11-5, 6-2), who had won six in a row and nine of 10 at Seattle, got to within two points on Tremaine Folkes’ putback, four free throws by Ed Gray and Shareef Abdur-Rahim’s 5-foot bank shot with 52.2 seconds left.
With 22.8 seconds to go, Abdur-Rahim blocked Jason Hartman’s 8-foot baseline shot and the ball went out of bounds off Hartman’s foot.
In the final 10 seconds, Gray took an 8-footer, Fowlkes missed a putback and Abdur-Rahim missed a putback as the Hec Edmundson Pavilion crowd of 7,537 held its breath.
Abdur-Rahim, Cal’s sensational freshman, scored 24 points, Fowlkes had 15 and 11 rebounds, Gray scored 14 and Michael Stewart had 17 rebounds and 12 points.
For Washington, Bryant Boston led the way with 15 points. Mark Sanford, Booker and MacCulloch each had 12.

Louisville 78, (15) UCLA 76
Brian Kiser made a 3-pointer with 4 seconds to play and the Cardinals (14-6), after blowing an eight-point lead in a 44-second span down the stretch, beat the Bruins (13-5). Louisville led 73-65 with 1:19 to play and appeared certain of snapping coach Denny Crum’s nine-game losing streak in Pauley Pavilion.
But UCLA’s pressure sparked a comeback, which was capped by Charles O’Bannon’s steal and slam dunk with 35 seconds remaining.
After a timeout, Louisville methodically set up a final shot, getting the ball to Kiser, wide open on the right wing.
