Local Students Elected Into Phi Kappa Phi
John McMurtery, Spokane, and Molly Rettkowski, Reardan, Wash., students at Central Washington University, have been elected into Phi Kappa Phi, the national academic honor society.
McMurtery is a wind performance major and Rettkowski is a mathematics/teaching major.
Judy Logan, Spokane, received a doctorate of philosophy in English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Logan has accepted an assistant professorship with Eastern Washington University’s English department.
Nine Inland Northwest students graduated from Whitman College last month with bachelor of arts degrees. The students, their majors, high schools and hometowns are:
Veronica Kimball, English, Gonzaga Prep, Veradale; Jack Louie, history, Gonzaga Prep, Spokane; Matthew Storey, chemistry/biology, Lewis and Clark, Spokane; Shawn LaRowe, economics/history, LC, Spokane; Erica Danielson, biology, Andover, MA, Spokane; Mark Fox, economics/mathematics, LC, Spokane; and Christopher McWatters, physics, University High, Spokane.
Students honored with speech and debate awards were Jack Louie III, first in the Intramural Debate Contest, and Christopher Cathcart, third.
Judith Baker, a broadcast studies major from Spokane who graduated from Gonzaga University in May, has received an internship with Time Warner, Inc., as part of International Radio and Television’s Summer Fellowship Program. She was one of 20 students selected nationwide for the program.
Michael Rosa, a graduate of University High School, has won an Advanced Honors Scholarship to Montana State University in Bozeman.

Three Inland Northwest students placed in the national Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) competition held recently in Orlando, Fla.
David McIvor, West Valley High School, placed second in the business and financial services marketing research event.
Courtney Glew, Cascade High School, placed sixth in general marketing series associate level.
Robert Richard, Ferris High School, was selected as a semifinalist in the entrepreneurship, participating category.

Meagan Elliott-Marsh, a graduate of West Valley High School, and Wendy Noriega, a graduate of Ferris High School, have each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Spokane Transportation Club.
