Dam With Sink Hole Remains Stable

From Staff And Wire Reports

The East Fork Dam has remained stable and flow from a drainpipe remains clear, Granite County Sheriff Don Dee Kennedy said Sunday.

A mandatory evacuation continues for the East Fork Dam downstream to Squaw Rock and a voluntary evacuation remains in effect from Squaw Creek Campground to the mouth of Rock Creek, Kennedy said in a news release. Forest closures remain in effect for the Rocky Creek drainage.

The sinkhole discovered Thursday has shown no significant change, he said.

Officials are continuing to lower the water level in the dam. They plan to reduce the level to 10,000 acre-feet, which is two-thirds the capacity of the dam, Kennedy said. That would lower the water level by 17 vertical feet.

A public information meeting is scheduled Monday at 7 p.m. at Granite High School in Philipsburg for residents in the upper Rock Creek drainage.
