Two Plane Crashes Claim Four Lives

From Staff And Wire Reports

Three people were killed when their search plane crashed while looking for another downed plane, which had crashed a day earlier, killing one person, authorities said.

Search and rescue teams spotted the wreckage of the search plane Sunday afternoon, about 30 minutes before they found the plane that went down Saturday.

One person died in the Saturday crash of a Piper Cherokee at Kokanee Glacier, about 25 miles north of Nelson. Two people survived and were taken to a hospital in Nelson, authorities said.

The search plane, also a Piper Cherokee, crashed just east of the glacier on Sunday.

It was among eight airplanes participating in the search from the Civilian Air Search and Rescue Association. The pilot, navigator and spotter were all from nearby Castlegar.

No names were released.
