Arthritis Sidelines Olazabal

Rheumatoid arthritis in both feet forced Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal out of next week’s British Open and put in further doubt his career as a golfer.

The 125th Open championship, to be played at England’s Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club July 18-21, was to be Olazabal’s first tournament since September.

At Carnoustie, Scotland, European Ryder Cup teammates Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam shot 2-under-par 70s to share the lead after the windswept first round of the Scottish Open. Montgomerie, the leader on the European money list and the winner last week of the Irish Open, was the only player in the 156-man field to finish without a bogey.

American amateur champion Tiger Woods shot a 9-over 81.
