Winston Cup drivers apparently dodged another tropical storm while Bertha washed out some sports events in the Northeast and then eyed the open seas.

Although torrential rains kept NASCAR drivers off the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon for a second day of qualifying, the Jiffy Lube 300 appeared safe with today’s drier, sunny weather on the way.

At Silverstone, England, Damon Hill clocked a lap at 130.613 mph, winning the pole for today’s British Grand Prix Formula One race.

Despite reports to the contrary, Al Unser Jr. will remain with Marlboro Team Penske for the 1997 season. Rumors have been rampant that Unser would leave the Penske team at the end of this season in order to join a team that would allow him to race in the Indianapolis 500.
