Striking Newspaper Workers Rally
Workers striking the city’s daily newspapers rallied Saturday on the walkout’s one-year anniversary, calling for a national labor march on Detroit.
About 1,000 strikers, supporters and family members turned out for rallies at The Detroit News building and a Detroit Newspapers Inc. printing plant in Sterling Heights.
“Something is missing,” said striking Detroit Free Press reporter Margaret Trimer-Hartley. “We need to unleash the power of the entire labor movement. We need a national labor march in Detroit.”
Both rallies were peaceful, although one man was arrested outside the printing plant for violating a court order that prohibits pickets from impeding the movement of vehicles in and out of the plant, police said.
About 2,500 workers went on strike July 13, 1995. The papers have continued to publish with managers, replacement workers and employees who have crossed the picket lines.
