Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: Do not shampoo your pet dog or cat with no-tears baby shampoo.

I did and it got in Inky’s eyes and burned one eye so badly she might lose it. Our veterinarian said she is not the first dog he has seen this happen to.

Hope this saves someone else’s pet such pain. - Mary Britton and Inky Sue, Logansport, Ind.

Thanks for writing, and I’m sure your letter will save many pets the pain your poor Inky Sue went through.

We checked with Dr. McIlhany, DVM, who sees our Black Jack and J.D., and he said most human and pet shampoos and soaps contain mild alkali that can possibly damage a pet’s eyes.

The most common source of chemical burns to the eyes is soap in the dog’s or cat’s eyes.

Here’s a hint. He recommends that when bathing your pet, first place a couple of drops of mineral oil in each eye to help protect them somewhat from the shampoo. Woof, woof from our furry boys! - Heloise

Dear Heloise: It was suggested that I write you and tell you what I use to dust china ornaments, piano or organ keys and finely carved furniture - a soft new paintbrush. If you haven’t tried it, please do. - Mrs. T. Bull, Delta, British Columbia
