Monica Seles tuned up for the Olympics by helping her adopted country sweep Japan in the Fed Cup tennis semifinals by routing Kimiko Date 6-0, 6-2 in Nagoya, Japan.

Seles, a Yugoslav native who became a U.S. citizen in 1994, led the United States into the Sept. 28-29 final against three-time defending champion Spain. Spain beat France 3-2 in Bayonne, France.

Alberto Costa won his first title of the year by defeating Spanish compatriot Felix Mantilla 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 6-0 to win the $560,000 Swiss Open at Gstaad, Switzerland.

Martina Navratilova, who teamed with Rosie Casals to win three titles in the late 1980s, presented the 12-time Grand Slam doubles champion with her induction certificate into the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport, R.I.

Casals was inducted with the late Dan Maskell, a British champion who became known as “The Voice of Wimbledon,” during a 40-year career with the BBC.
