Does The Fee Include A Curse?
Corky Ra mummifies pets for a living. And now he’s hoping his company, Summum, can break into the human market.
So far, 137 people have signed up for the process.
Among them is Cindra Stolk, 44, of Moreno Valley.
“My first thought was, oh my God, these people are out of their minds. This is bizarre,” she said.
But she changed her mind after hearing more.
“The way they explained the whole burial process,” she said, “where nothing is done except sticking embalming fluid in you and sticking you in the ground where all things can come and get you - including worms - I said ‘You know, why not?”’
As a fitness buff, Stolk is looking forward to having her body preserved.
“Why spend thousands of dollars in health-club fees while you’re alive, then let everything go to pot just because your dead?” reads a Summum brochure.
But the process isn’t cheap.
Ra did a parrot not long ago for about $1,700, and $3,200 will cover your basic, no-frills cat mummification. The price for humans starts at around $32,000.
