Art Center Offering Decorating Workshops

If thoughts turn to interior decorating this week, they should also turn to Corbin Art Center.

Two workshops - French Country Topiary and Faux Finishes - will be offered this week as part of the summer class schedule offered by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department.

French Country Topiary is Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and is $27. Faux Finishes is Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and is $17. To register, call 625-6200.

Get some help: With July comes heat, bugs and height of the growing season. Those with garden problems can get free help at the Master Gardener Clinic and Resource Center, 222 N. Havana. The center’s open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and is staffed by horticulturists and trained volunteers. Or you can call a staff member at 533-2048.

The resource center also has books and fact sheets on topics ranging from lawns, fruits and perennials to starting business such as herb or flower farms and nurseries.

Kudos: The Inland Empire Gardeners came home from the national convention of The Gardeners of America in Colorado last month with two awards. The club’s newsletter was named the best newsletter in the United States for clubs with more than 100 members. And the group took the Spade Club Award for having the largest number of members sponsor new members for the club.

Take a tour: There’s no doubt summer is the time when Spokane’s parks really shine. Those who want to tour the parks can get a free copy of a city parks map by calling 625-6200.

The map, which includes historical information about the parks as well as lists of community recreation centers, recreational facilities and golf courses, was produced by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department.

Back to school: The lineup of outdoor-related workshops sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department continues next week. Kids ages 5-9 can take classes named “What’s in the Water?” Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m., “Wild Worms” Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. or “Bugs” Saturday 1-3 p.m. “Terrariums,” for kids 7-10, is Tuesday 1-3 p.m.

Adult workshops are “Dwarf Conifers” Monday, 7-8 p.m., and “Composting” Thursday, 7-9 p.m.

All the workshops are free and are at Finch Arboretum; registration is recommended, however. Call 625-6664.
