Soccer

The Spokane Shadow beat the Yakima Reds 6-2 on Friday at Spokane Falls Community College behind the impressive goaltending of goalie Bill May.

Early on, Spokane defender Harlan Slind made an ill-advised pass about 15 yards away from his own goal where the ball was intercepted by Yakima forward Jake Murphy.

Murphy, wide open, fired a rocket to the right side of the goal. But on this night, May was on. He came up with a kick save with his left leg and the ball rolled harmlessly out of bounds.

Shortly before that play, Murphy was thwarted on his header attempt by May, who hauled in his attempt. Later in the half, the Reds’ Bob McAllister fired another wide-open, point-blank shot at May, a shot May again smothered.

“We weren’t very clean in the beginning,” May said.

But May sure was.

“He set the tone for himself and the team,” Spokane coach Einar Thorarinsson said. “He jumped on the fullbacks and told them to do their jobs. But those early saves got his confidence up. It’s just like a quarterback in football, those first touches in the game are important.”

While May made his saves, Yakima keeper Derek Collins could not.

Spokane got on the board first at the 16:55 mark when Jim Martinson took a pass from Ryan Edwards in a dead sprint down the right side and rifled a shot from 20-yards out for a 1-0 lead.

Then at 38:12, Martinson scored his second goal of the night (his 10th of the season) off a perfect pass from teammate Zane Higgins for a 2-0 lead.

“It was good for us to get going early,” Martinson said. “I got some great passes from those guys - they found me wide open.”

Later, with five seconds to go before intermission, Higgins took a ball down the right side, outran Reds’ defender Matt Froehle to the corner and slid the ball past Collins for a 3-0 margin Yakima just couldn’t recover from.
