They’re Even Inviting Some Suspicious Mimes

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

Some folks are all shook up about the Second Annual International Conference on Elvis Presley at the University of Mississippi.

The program includes “Elvis Herselvis,” an Elvis impersonator from San Francisco who bills herself as “the atomic-powered lesbian,” and a man who says he’s Elvis Presley Jr.

Fundamentalist ministers are up in arms, and Elvis Presley Enterprises and the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau have withdrawn their financial support.

Says conference director Vernon Chadwick, an English prof who teaches a course on the similarities between “Blue Hawaii” and Herman Melville’s tales of the South Pacific: “When you enlarge the scope of the conference and include non-traditional experts, you run the risk of dysfunction. It’s the price you pay for outrage.”

Loose talk

Meat Loaf (aka Marvin Lee Aday), on his name (on TV Guide Online): “I’ve been called that since I was about a year old. Teachers called me Meat: ‘Meat, sit down and be quiet.’ It was on the football program: ‘Meat Loaf, 74, defensive tackle.”’

She’s doing OK, but she needs some bridgework

Bobbie “Ode To Billie Joe” Gentry turns 54 today.

Didn’t she just get through kicking the dope?

Elvis’ daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was a druggie in her early teens, mom Priscilla tells Ladies’ Home Journal: “L.A. is a horrendous place to raise a child. All the traps were there. Then she had an older boyfriend, who was a big influence. My struggle became more difficult because I had him, and drugs, to contend with.” But now, she says: “Elvis would be amazed … He would be proud of Lisa Marie.”

A fixer-upper? Hey, he’s used to remodeling

And speaking of Michael Jackson, he was smitten with the gambling town of Sun City during his recent visit to South Africa. “I love it so much I’m looking for a house to buy here,” he told reporters.

God’s house, but not the Godfather of Soul’s

James Brown brought his hard-working act to Atlanta’s House of Blues this weekend, but because the club is a converted church, he decided to perform such signature tunes as “Sex Machine” in a tent outside. “I’m having a little problem with the church,” Brown said. “We’re going to play in the yard.”

It sort of makes you want to ask, ‘What’s up?’

Paula Yates has named her first child by rocker hubby Michael Hutchence of INXS: Heavenly Hirani Tiger Lily. She had three children with former husband Bob Geldof (of Live Aid/Boomtown Rats fame), Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches and Pixie.

They just might throw you in a black hole, son

Soundgarden lead guitarist Kim Thayil faces assault and property damage charges after allegedly slapping a young female fan who wanted to be photographed with him and breaking her friend’s camera at the recent Lollapalooza show in North Carolina.
